Noe Valley Modern

Challenge

This newly constructed home in Noe Valley offered excellent bones—generous ceiling heights, large windows, and an efficient floor plan—but lacked character and storage. The clients, both working professionals with one child, needed dedicated home office space, ample storage for books and toys, and a welcoming environment for extended family visits. The blank slate was simultaneously an opportunity and a challenge: how to create a sense of warmth and history in a home with no architectural patina.

Approach

The design strategy focused on materiality and built-in elements. We introduced texture through natural materials: wide-plank white oak floors, textured plaster walls, and blackened steel details. Custom millwork was designed for every major room—a floor-to-ceiling bookcase in the living room, a built-in desk and filing system in the home office, and a mudroom bench with cubbies and hooks. The material palette remained restrained: warm whites, soft grays, and natural wood tones, allowing artwork and furnishings to provide color and personality. Furnishings were selected for durability and comfort—performance fabrics, solid wood pieces, and flexible seating arrangements that adapt to both family movie nights and dinner parties.

Outcome

The completed home feels warm, lived-in, and thoughtfully composed. Built-in elements provide abundant storage while contributing architectural interest to the modern shell. Natural light, amplified by the light palette and reflective surfaces, makes the home feel spacious and calm. The clients report that the home office has proven especially successful, providing focused work space that feels separate from family areas despite the open floor plan. The project demonstrates how intentional material choices and custom millwork can give a new home the depth and character typically associated with older architecture.

Design Choices
We designed around the home's exceptional southern exposure, using light-reflective materials and a soft neutral palette to amplify daylight throughout. Built-in furniture solutions—a window seat library, office cabinetry, and media storage—were detailed to feel architectural rather than applied, creating a sense that they've always been part of the home.
